Why is it positive points just sit there and smile while the negative points stick out like a sore thumb?
I speak from personal experience...
Forget getting RVers advice about 24/12 converters and GOGGLE Cruising Sailboat Forum.
These folks live and die with the reality issue. The reality issue is one of reliability and forgiveness. I'm not trying to be mean to the RVers forum here but there simply isn't enough aggregate experience with this issue to make advice meaningful. Converters don't grow on trees in vacationland. If you want to risk, if you want to bet the outcome of a vacation on unknown reliability then that's different - go for it. I have a 24-volt bus and I approched things a different way. Nothing inside is 12-volt.
A week's worth of heavy overcast will afford lots of time to reflect on the wisdom of your choice.
The converter can be kept as a back-up 12v solution (inefficient to use on batts through the inverter, but possible.....also it is preferable to keep for use when hook-ups are available to keep from unnecessarily cycling the batteries.
