30 Amp Elec plug/ is this straight forward fix?

I tackle most anything on my RV's. But past experiences with elec mixed with RV's lights up a little light in my mind that says CHECK FIRST!

Here is a pic of my 30 amp cord. Notice the end is coming outdone. The cord is not molded into the head. Just mashed in there.

Question: Is this a straight forward fix. Get another head and make sure I get wires right?

Or... does this fix if I screw it up lead into a posting next week that asks "how do I unscrew the mess I got into"?

(learned my lesson to ask after changing brake light and the wire fell back between shower stall and rear of rv, spend 2 days fishing the wire out.)

Thanks

  • Lay the cord out in the sun.
Work the sheathing toward the plug and it will slide right back in.
Before it goes in apply your choice of adhesive to keep it there.
I used JB Weld and it is holding fine over five years.
Gorilla Glue or some rubber cement should also work fine.

You can replace the end another day.
And if you must I recommend the one supplied by PI EMS

  • +1 on RoyB's comment to pull the shell back down. Also, hardware stores sell a liquid electrical tape stuff that works well to hold the two pieces together. Unless there is an issue with the wires in the plug, I would fix it this way.
  • Blades on yours look like they got a little warm. Naolox will help for a better contact. If you replace your end I like the Camco with the handle on it. Easy grip and plenty of room inside to attach wires.

I would go back on the other end of the cable and use my hand real tight around the cable and keep workiing the outer part towards the other end...

You will gain alot outter shell covering doing this.

Then the cable should push into the head pretty far now. Then you use some rubber glue or whatever it is called and re-glue all around the two sections...

If it wasn't so large I would use some adhesive heat shrink around both sections and heat it up to shrink both ends together...

Or you can go to ETRAILER.COM and but a new 30A cable with a new molded head on it...

Or you can pick up a new 30A plug and cut this end off and install the new head onto this cable which will use crimp-on or solder-up connections...

I like the idea of just getting a new one from ETRAILER.COM

  • If it is a molded type only thing is to cut it and buy a replacement plug available most any hardware store. I find it easiest to use an ax.

White wire to silver lug. Hot, black wire to bronze. Green to ground
