30 amp Hughs Autoformer

After more than 10 years of use in campgrounds, the autoformer seemed to have caused a short which destroyed the pedestal receptacle and tripped the campground breaker. I do not know the electrical consumption at the time of failure. I do know that consumption would be close to 30 amps and that the campground breaker is shared (2, 30 amp breakers together) with another site which must be very close to using 30 amps as well. Oddly enough the front furnace seems to have a board failure, however that may be a coincidence. (new board installed 1 year ago)

perhaps usage exceeded 30 amps or what was available?

continual usage of autoformer 24/7 for 6 months with usage increased as cold weather sets in?

the pedestal receptacle fried and took out the autoformer?

the physical damage was a worn out looking pedestal receptacle which did not work anymore, a fried white wire brass tong and the autoformer no longer working.

plugged the MH into a replaced receptacle and everything ok without the autoformer.

  • After that if it still does not work there may be a fuse or breaker in that auto-former that has tripped. :)
  • Change the plug on the auto-former by cutting back a few inches to get to good wire & insulation. :) That will most likely get it working again. :)
  • I would guess it's a simple as the poor connection of a worn out 30 amp receptacle. It was probably old making poor contact. Your continuous use of 30 amps caused it to heat up. Heat makes a bad connection worse. A worse connection makes the heat worse. Eventually, it burns up.
