With flathead aircooled engines we would remove the head and have .030" shaved off of it. Many of these whiz-bang engines operate with 5.5 to 1 compression ratio. So what if you need to use premium gasoline at sea level. At altitude it may get the job done.
Overhead valve and overhead cam engines are darned near untouchable.
