"Right now the roof on my fifth wheel has two 10 gauge wires going through it down to the present controller"
I've seen some really really long runs of wire between the panels and controller. Myself I try hard to maintain a 1% voltage loss. I have never heard the complaint "I am having trouble because I ran too large a gauge wire from the panels to the controller". The same can be said of wire AWG between controller and batteries.
I cannot recount the number of times I have ended up discouraged because a customer asked me why their system was not performing to their expectations and seeing unacceptable voltage drop (differentials).
