I would guess there are several of us with over 500 watts of solar PV power. Also many using #10 awg wire. Done properly it works great.
My system consists of a 550 watt array (Voc about 45 volts) with about a 15ft run of flexible #10 wire (30ft total length) to a 60amp controller and 6ft of #4 wire to the battery bank. I regularly see a bit more than 40 amps being supplied to the loads (the battery bank itself hardly ever needs that amount of current) from the array.
