50 amp plug hitting power panel lip

My 50 amp camco male plug with the large handle prevented my plug from fully seating into the female socket because the handle/case hit the panel lip below the socket. This is the first time I had this happen. Is there a small adapter I can plug to extend out the camco plug so the yellow plastic is further out from the campground panel? Thanks.

  • Just today I had the same situation. It's a plastic box so I did a bit of "plastic surgery" on the lip. I took the front off to see if it could be fixed from the inside, but that was not an option as the plug was bolted to the rear of the box. I'll add a better tool (instead of a utility knife and pliers) to my kit as I see this happening again.
  • This was at a brand new campground and I wouldn't want to hack their boxes. Plus, the "socket" area is inset so there really isn't anything to bend to provide clearance. Thanks.
  • It's not so much the design of pedestal panel.......

    It's the new plug designs.
With a handle as part of the plug they are longer and the bottom of plug is striking the lower panel lip that the cover closes over when not in use.

  • I find it amazing that the designers/installers of these boxes don't allow for the plug/cord clearance.

I have never had that happen but knowing how the panel is built I suspect it needs the attention of someone with a screwdriver to dissassemble it and re-assemble it PROPERLY.

X2 a pair of channel lock pliers work good too

  • Hi Pirate,

I've run into the same problem with 30 amp shore power. I fear that I used a small hacksaw to modify the pedestal (It was mine).
