No they are NOT exactly the same. Had a licensed electrician put a 30 amp RV service in a private camp site ( I even supplied the RV supply plug). I checked before plugging in and found he had wired it as a 220VAC 30amp service. Had I not checked that would have been a disaster.
Who said anything about 30 amp? What you said is wrong. 50 amp is 50 amp, it's a NEMA configuration, and it is *always* wired the same way.
Now the 30 amp is only recently been given a NEMA classification, and you are correct in it needs to be dealt with carefully, but as you experienced, even getting a licensed electrician is no guarantee with these, even though they are clearly labeled 120 volts.
