50 amp to 15 amp

I had the puck adapter that Bud showed. I used it for years. One day I was plugged into a long extension cord at my son's house in Tn. and it rained that night and the pins arced and burnt. I was then forced to use the dog bone style adapters that came with the MH also. For me it is a lot easier to use because I plug my whole house inverter into it also. I don't have a transfer switch.

All links are to camping world but if you go to any major RV dealer they will likely have at least one of the products listed,,, NOTE these are short "Dogbone" length adapters you will need a 12 ga EXTENSION cord from Sears or K=mart (Best) or one of the home improvement stores (The Sears/Kmart brand has a lock-on outlet I like rather well) to feed it.

You can also get 50-15 amp RV plug (Blade not twist lock) type from the same sources, just back up a page on CW's web site (Click on Electrical Adapters near the top of the page) and likewise at most RV stores, both puck type and dogbone type.

The puck adapters tend to heat and then pins get soft in the plastic. Add the weight of the cable...

In our experience, the dogbone adapters are superior and less hassle.

As for Home Depot, CALL before you go. The stores cannot look up items by the part or item # online :R. Yes, it's true...they need to hire a teenager in their web department to fix that ;)

Walmart has an RV section near the automotive. Online is our normal choice, Amazon Prime, but not always the lowest price or most accurate descriptions. Heck, sometimes their pics don't match the description, but even if you report it, they don't care.

Make sure to use a heavy extension cord.

I would get 2 dogbones, 50/30 and 30/15. The reason for that is somewhere down the line you will need a 50/30. A the inlaws house I ran a 20 amp extension (#10 wire and 20 amp plugs on both ends) into a 15/30 dogbone, 3 30 amp extension cords, my 30/50 dogbone, and the factory 50 amp cord. Advantage, piece and quiet, drawback - shutting EVERYTHING off to run the microwave.

I realize this is for light duty only. I just want juice to cool the fridge and run some lights while inside once in a while. But thanks for all the warnings and concern. I appreciate the feedback.

Now you have the part to buy, but remember, in spite of what they call it, it is a 15 to 50 amp adapter (20 has different pins). That means you can charge the house bank, cool the reefer and very little else. If you have people that don't understand, the shut down the microwave, A/C, and water heater at the panel. They are a great convenience to have and yes they are light duty (DUH). A 15amp supply to a 50amp coach is going to be light duty....

This adapter falls into the "puck" category, as opposed to the "dogbone" category which has the Male end, a short cable (less than a foot) then the Female end. Adapters heat up where they plug into the supply socket nad where the RV plugs into the adapter's socket. Advantage to dogbone is that heat has two places to dissipate. In a puck, that heat is all concentrated in one place.

For that reason, I'd rate this HD/Amazon puck adapter as Light Duty. Don't expect it to carry much more than Converter/Charger for Lights, Refrigerator Logic Board and maybe its heater element. Try running A/C or electric heaters and I think you'll overheat it in short order.

Not saying don't do it. Just understand its limitations.There's a recent thread about all this. Started out as trying to get as much amps into a 50A coach as a couple 20A outlets could provide, as I recall. Then it went on into the advantages of dogbone adapters over pucks. I think it also touched on GFCI.

That said, not sure it'll work for you if the circuit you plug it into happens to be GFCI. Electrical gurus here can help with that.
