The two hot legs of a 50-amp RV connection are each 120 volts, 180 degrees out of phase. Between each hot leg and the common neutral you get 120 volts, which is the way an RV uses the power available in the pedestal socket. However . . .
Create a short between the two hot legs using a metal pry bar, and you will experience the power of 240 volts. :)
