We have a 50A trailer with one A/C so we can get by on 30A and since our 30A cable is more convenient we use it frequently. Or we get into a site that only has 30A. I want to carry just one protector and 50A seems more logical IF it will work for 30A.
Although you haven't said specifically it sounds like you're intending to buy a "surge protector" for your trailer which is wired with 50 amp main service - correct? If that's the case then it would make the most sense to buy a 50 amp model and dogbone it whenever you might be drawing from 30 amp service. HOWEVER you also want to make sure it's not just a "surge protector" but rather an EMS w/surge protection that will not only protect against surges but also the many vagaries you're sure to run into when camping on electric sites, whether 50 amp or 30 amp service. Favoured models are both portable and hardwire versions from both Progressive Industries and TRC (Technology Research Corp).
