Ours has the 12v wires to the thermostat always live. No batteries in the thermostat. Same thing in the 5er but that one also ran the air conditioner so it has more wires and such. This one is just for the furnace. The furnace fan runs first and last with the burner switch. I don't need a fan-only control for cooling where we camp, just a straight furnace control set-up.
In this day and age I was thinking electronic/digital since mechanical stats are so last century. :B Mechanical stats do not use a battery, they also don't do as well as a electronic/digital stat in maintaining a set point.
