Hypothetically, you can burn 8A panel by passing 40A current through it - damage diodes in there, or wiring in that small connections box attached to the panel. But I can't imagine where this current would come from, on the section between the panel and controller. Especially if both battery and controller are fused. Lightning bolt striking right into the panel wire?
Btw, I checked my panel specs and it agrees with what Don said - 25A suggested maximum fuse in series. Which probably will be 20A or 30A breaker, for simplicity. There are no cheap 25A DC breakers.
