Another interesting aspect of EV evolution will be charging stations. Some believe that tsla will have some edge on all the others as far as charging stations. It could also be argued that tsla may just be the one who is going first and burning money. The government did mandate obd2 standards for all so they may do the same when it comes to charging infrastructure. I find that more likely over having a dozen different charging stations and connector styles. Time will tell.
Well, i don't know about a dozen but I agree that at sometime others will buy into the tesla supercharger network.
There are presently three standards for DC fast charging.
Tesla.
Chademo (mostly japanese vehicles)
CCS. Mostly european vehicles.
However most non Tesla DC fast chargers in north america are "Combo chargers" and have both a Chademo and CCS connecters. They are also quite prevalent in europe.
And having said that, most of the DC fast chargers in the world are Tesla.
Level 2 (or alternating current feeds) is another story. J1772 is the boss here and although there are a few different connecters used all EV's are compatible with the format. After that it is a matter of buying adapters so you can plug in to 120 volt or 240 volt at various amperages. As well Tesla also uses J1772 format but they use their own connecter. Teslas come with an adapter to connect to any J1772 plug and a non Tesla person can buy an adapter to connect to a Tesla destination charger. (we have one and occasionally use it all the J1772 chargers are full and a Tesla wall charger is open. This occasionally happens in public charging areas, wineries, shopping centres etc)
So although there are a few different connectors it is not a show stopper for those of us driving EV's.
It is interesting to watch plug share activity and watch the amount of level 2 (mostly) and level three chargers popping up on a daily basis. One of the casinos in this area recently added a dozen level 2 chargers. Open to the public. Free. But you have to walk past the casino or the restaurants on the way out of the parking area. They figured it out and like many businesses the loss leader power of level 2 chargers and to some degree level 3 chargers is compelling. Restaurants are starting to figure it out to. I noticed a greek restaurant add one here this year. Think it may be time to get some souvlaki. :)
