Yeah I hear you, we love what our solar can do as well. Not knowing what the temps were when your neighbors started up their generators it may well be for running their AC units, although there are plenty who still use their generators for just watching TV or other low power draw items. Most even know about the advantages of solar, it can't be a $$$ issue since generators are more costly.
When temps and weather are good our solar negates the use of our genny for battery charging which is then just utilized to momentarily power high draw items as needed. We would never leave home without our genny as we occasionally camp in extreme temperatures, having the ability to press a single button restoring full power to our rig is simply priceless.
