MEXICOWANDERER

Unfortunately the true test of generator waveform conformity is when it is connected to an inductive load at >70% VAR capacity of the generator. Light load testing for light load usage of course is useful. But reactive loads cause the greatest harmonics and distortion. The recovery time (ms) of a highly reactive load disconnect is also a useful value to understand. For smaller generators I use a 5,000 BTU air conditioner.
Keep up the good work. When I went through months of misery waiting for a non-400Hz KATO unit to become available I began to question the wisdom of jumping through hoops. It was worth the wait.
As far as Onan is concerned, I lost respect for their engineering the first time I had to work on a >MW genset. There is no reason for nightmare complexity power generation. Except of course to ensure that replacement parts absolutely had to remain Onan. A hundred twenty dollars for an inductive AC meter coil?
Onan outright bribed the military in the sixties to buy their nightmares. They sold the units AT COST then hosed them (the taxpayer) for a nightmarish quantity of repair parts at prices that would have ------ --- the Sultan of Brunei. After I and others went to Cam Ranh Bay and appropriated a LIMA generator from under the nose of the Beach-master, we had no more problems. Stuff like this sticks with a person. Had the old saturated field 6.5NH overhead valves, it would have been the stuff of legend. Pttoie.
