a/c, generator issue

hello all, newbie here

I have an East to West Silver Lake 27kns that when hooked up to shore power everything works as it should, but when I hook to my Westinghouse iGen 4500 generator and turn on the A/C, the generator starts to surge and kills power to camper. meanwhile control panel for inverter shows overload and dead battery. I turned all lights and appliances off, let generator get back to level idle, turned just the fan on for about 10 minutes (ran fine) then turned A/C/ on again on low setting and it ran fine for about an hour then started surging again with no other loads on. what do I need to check first? the a/c or the generator? the generator is about 4 months old, this is only the second time using it, the first time was in December so a/c was not used.

  • Try killing all the breakers except the air/con circuit. It wasn't clear if the water heater was on, battery charger, fridge and other items and it could be pulling 3000-3500watts, which theoretically it should handle but will be stressing it out. If it still cuts out with just the air/con circuit on, it's probably something with the generator.

  • I suspected that was the a 30 Amp trailer. The gen should be able to handle that A/C. Possibly bad gas in the gen (has the gas been in there a few months)? Other than that you would have to test the gen to see what its actual max output is.

  • the generator says 3700 running watts, 4500 peak watts, not sure what the a/c unit requires, I'll have to look when I get home.

  • What wattage is the generator? It sounds like it doesn’t have enough wattage to run your A/C. Check the wattage requirements of the A/C  (Startup amps X 120) vs. the wattage output of the generator.
