AC problems

Just returned from a quick weekend trip after 6 months of storage. The AC was giving me problems. I have a Dometic single zone LCD thermostat.

The thermostat was set at 74 and auto. The AC would run for about 2-3 minutes the shutoff for 2-3 minutes and so on. The fan runs, I can hear the compressor start-up for about a minute then I hear the compressor shut off, then the fan shuts off. It just repeats this cycle.

I tried setting the thermostat to fan lo and it would do the same. Lowered the temp to force the compressor to stay on and had the same result.

Could this be a bad thermostat are a more serious issue? Any advise would be appreciated.

Finally got the TT to the house to work on this issue. Replaced the thermostat and got the same result. So i removed the inside panel from the inside. In doing so I noticed a small white wire was smashed between this panel and the AC metal chasis. The AC started running normally.

I checked the wire and did not see any physical damage. I kept moving the wire around and couldn't recreate the problem. Testing for several hours and the AC works great.

So I guess it is fixed for now. I would have the dealer replace the wire the next time I bring it in.

Thanks for all of your help. This forum is great for getting information to make repairs especially since I have to keep my TT in storage the info you guys provide allow me to be prepared when I get my TT home for such repairs.

    Thanks again.

The odds are that wire is one of the 2 FREEZE Thermister wires which controls operation of the compressor. Follow that wire and see if it goes to the evaporator fins. Doug

  • Odds are you have a BAD compressor. You need to have an AMP check done on the compressor. Doug
  • IIRR my AC had a 2 or 3 year warranty on it.Might be worth checking into.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately it is two month's out of warranty. I will try these things as soon as I can get it back home from storage.
  • thermostat is the trailer 2014, is it over a year old ? may be under warrante
  • I had that happen before and it turned out to be a bad thermostat. You might disconnect the thermo and put the two wires together that call for ac bypassing the thermostat. If it runs continuous you'll know the thermostat is bad.

TucsonJim, may be on the right track also.
  • It may be a very simple fix. Remove the screws to the AC grill on the interior of the trailer. Look up inside and see if a panel has moved. What happens is that if the panel moves, the cold air immediately circulates back up the intake side, and the AC sensor thinks its down to the set temperature. If it's moved, reposition and tape in place with aluminized duct tape.

Of course, this advice could be incorrect depending on the model of AC you have. But even so, I'd check for a path for the cold air to be immediately returning to the intake. BTW, your dust filter is clean isn't it?
