AC wiring question

I'm trying to add an AC outlet in one of my basement compartment. I found a hot line running through the adjoining compartment. When I cut into it I found it's a three wire, black, green & yellow. It goes to the area under the sink. I'm not sure what the green and yellow are or how/if I should splice into it. Is the green ground, yellow hot and black neg?

  • Maybe you cut into the wiring for the tail lights/brakes? Green, Yellow, BROWN are commonly used.
  • Got a voltmeter? (As if you should trust an answer from here)
  • That wire may not be a 120 VAC. What does it say on the insulation sheath. The ground typically is uninsulated, bare copper wire. After cutting, use a volt meter between the various wires. The hot side should show 120 VAC to both of the other wires. The neutral and ground should show 0 VAC between them.
  • Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't want to short anything out.

This shows your lack of knowledge on AC current, so be VERY carefull doing this work yourself. There is NO such thing as positive and negative on 120 ac current. You have
    BLACK which is HOT
    White which is Neutral
    Green/bare copper which is GROUND
The fact you state YELLOW. Are you positive this wire is a 120 line? I have never seen a YELLOW wire in an RV that was used for any 120ac wiring. There may be such a wire, but you need to verify that those wires are indeed 120 volt wires. What makes you think this particular 3 wire is 120 volt? Is this wire ROUND like an extension cord? Is it possible the "yellow" is really white and the age of the RV has discolored that wire from white to pale yellow. Or is this wire REAL yellow? Doug
  • Hi,

The new receptacle has places for 3 wires. The green is always ground, then the brass screws go to the black wire. The third wire will be the white neutral wire, and go to the silver screws on your new receptacle. I don't know why your manufacture used yellow wire, but normally the neutral will be either white or gray in homes built to NEC standards in the United States.

    Fred.
