Adjusting valve lash on Onan 4000

Onan Micro quiet 4000 (gas) 2003 era

Haven't adjusted valves on this before.

Any advice on adjusting valves? Is it straight forward like other valves or something I should watch out for?

Am I pretty will guarantied I should have new gasket on hand before I start?

What is your opinion or any tips?
  • I did mine a while back. With the really small clearance I found it difficult to get the lock nut tightened with the clearance still correct, Just took a while, finally got it done.
  • I hadn't thought about adjusting the valves on my 4KY. It has around 105 hours and runs fine. (now that it has a new pump...)

Looking through the owners manual in the maintenance section, I find the schedule for adjusting the valves.
It is 450 hours, with a footnote: "6 Must be performed by a qualified mechanic (authorized Onan dealer)."

The service manual states how to adjust them and provides specs, but doesn't mention a service interval. I would have thought they would put the maintenance intervals in the service manual as well.

    For both intake and exhaust:
Valve Stem to Rocker Arm Clearance (Valve Lash)
    ALLOWABLE LIMIT: 0.0008/0.0032 (0.02/0.08)
All clearances are at 70° F (21° C) room temperature.
All measurements are listed in inches with millimeter measurements in parentheses.
  • Clean around the area before opening things up. Then use a shop vac to remove any debris around the opening and in the engine.
  • I've done several always been able to save the gasket . Do you have the specs ? If not I'll post a service manual . What's the the spec letter on the gen ?
