Ok, this is probably the stupidest question, but is 300w 12v the same power as 300w 24v?
A single 300w 12 volt panel is not going to charge a 24v battery.
Two 12v 150w can be wired in series to give 24v 300 watts.
A 150w 12v panel gives about 8 amps. Two in series still gives the 8 amps but twice the voltage so you still have 300 watts rated.
If you buy 12v panels you need to buy them in pairs for a 24v system.
You did say you had a 24 volt system right? I do find this odd as you also mentioned the alternator charging the battery. Two 12v batteries in parallel is still 12 volts. (connected B+B+ & B-B-)
