A couple years ago I installed a 30 amp RV receptacle on the side of my garage. I don't remember what kind of wire I used, but I ran the wire myself from the fuse box to the location where the receptacle would be mounted. I think I did a bit of over kill, because all the wire was inserted into grey plastic conduit, as everything in my garage was in conduit.
I had an electrician actually do the connection at the fuse box and the receptacle. He told me I did an over kill feeding the wire through the conduit. Conduit was only required for non-insulated single stranded wire. The wires that are insulated with 3 wires don't need the conduit. He was pleasantly impressed with my work.
The result has been completely satisfactory. I have about 150 feet of 30 amp RV extension cord. I've not had to use all of that at home, but it has afforded the opportunity to park the trailer in different locations around the house. Our back yard is a great campground. But a little tricky getting the trailer in there. It took 75 feet of electric cord to read the receptacle. In the drive way, I usually need 50 feet. But this week, I backed up right to the garage and the 25 footer is perfectly fine, but now the sidewalk to my house from the garage is blocked.
We use the trailer all the time. Actually, I'm in it right this moment. We've been sleeping every night in it, and hitting State Parks over the week-ends. So, I suppose we are full-timing right at home! It sure is nice to run the air-conditoner and not worry about breakers popping in the house or the garage.
I picked up the receptacle from Lowe's. After purchasing it, we were at Modern Trailer in Anderson and they sold receptacles also. Wish I would have checked there first. They had cut off switches. The one I purchased does not.
The electrician installed the 30 amp breaker in the main fuse box in the garage, and he clearly understood this was an RV plug, 110, and not 220. After he hooked everything up, I plugged in the camper with him still present and it worked perfect! $100 for his services (yea, and it only took him 15 minutes to hook up the wires) and 5 minutes to hook up the camper and he was gone! Sweet! Best $$$$ we ever spent on the camper. We've enjoyed camp driveway and camp back yard tremendously!
