The ones on either truck I own are not sealed units, they are a set of tapered roller bearings just like the trailer. Only reason they've ever been apart in 100,000 miles was to replace the brake rotor. Seems like there is plenty of sideways forces, what with the steering input. As far as tighter tolerances, are you referring to the spindle clearances? A good quality bearing whether for car, truck, or trailer has a given set of tolerances. They don't vary depending on what they go on.
So why do trailer bearings need to be serviced so often? I'm serious about wishing a real answer. Seems I ought to be able to put in a good bearing with good grease and never have to touch it again. So what gives?
