So, I wanted to ask the forum, if anyone has any negatives about the AGM type batteries, versus the flooded type ?
Hi Joe,
IMHO the only downsides to AGM batteries are a) cost and b) the possibility of damage from over-charging due to the fact that any vented electrolyte (water) cannot be replaced. For me, the advantages of AGM's (low internal resistance, high charge/discharge rates, little or no venting, low maintenance, long life, good cold performance) far outweigh the disadvantages.
As other have mentioned, you
can successfully charge an AGM with a "standard" battery charger or converter. However, at least in the case of the Odyssey batteries I am using, most regular converter/chargers will not charge at a high enough
voltage to get and AGM to 100% SOC. This little detail gets complicated because charging at higher voltages can also cause overcharging.
If you are going to make an investment in AGM batteries, then I also suggest that you get a charger that will ensure the best performance and long service life from them. This type of charger is typically programmable and will have temperature compensation. I also recommend that you check with the manufacturer of the battery you choose and follow the charging protocol they suggest.
Cheers
