No way in hell does a "same weight" VRB have the same 20 AH rating as a flooded battery.
True statement.
However I've noticed in almost all vehicles I've ever owned that if their battery boxes would hold a 12 volt Group 27 battery, their boxes would also usually hold a 12 volt Group 29 - and often - a 12 volt Group 31 battery.
The above holds true for our current Itasca motorhome - that came stock equiped with only a couple of pathetic 12 volt Group 24 wet cell batteries for it's coach. The battery compartment will also hold up to a couple of 12 volt Group 31 batteries.
So...... I'm partially making up for the slightly less volume-versus-capacity of Absorbed Glass Mat ("VR" = Valve Regulated) batteries by using a couple of 12 volt Group 29 AGM batteries. If I ever have to replace the current 12 volt AGM batteries, I'll give serious consideration to using 12 volt Group 31 AGM batteries instead of anything smaller.
I'd never settle for only a 12 volt Group 27 size deep cycle - either wet or dry - RV battery if I could possibly squeeze in a 12 volt Group 29 or 31 size deep cycle. It's best to always use up as much of your battery compartment volume as you can afford to, dollar-wise.
