A properly installed Tri-Metric battery monitor tells you a lot more than voltage. It uses a shunt to measure amps. You then program it with the size of your battery bank and it will act as a fuel gauge.
There is no gauge that says "you need to replace your battery in 6 months."
You could periodically drain your battery with a known amperage and time how long it takes it to drop to a given voltage. This would tell you it's current capacity. This capacity would diminish as it aged so you could see how low it was getting. However, nobody does that and it would shorten the life of the battery from all the tests.
