Altitude adjustment on Onan generators

I'm curious about something. My former class C had an Onan 4KW generator with an altitude adjustment with a range from 0 to 10,000 feet. My current class A has an Onan 5500 with an altitude adjustment of only 0 to 5,000 feet.

Anyone know why the 5500 generator can only be adjusted to 5,000 feet?

Thanks, Ken

  • Just bought a new carb for my 4K last summer they all come that way my old one went to 10K but the replacements are 5K. I would assume if you forgot to reset it @ sea level and it was set @ 10K it would run lean enough to burn a piston. I say it is a CYA move by Cummins.
  • I am curious too. I ordered a new carb for my 5500 and it only says 5,000ft also where as my old one says 10,000 as does my buddies with a 5500. I am almost certain I got the correct carb as it is installed and not seeing any other options available. I did notice the part number replaced another so I suspect they just changed this. Strange as many people camp neverless live above 5,000 ft.
  • Is yours a gas or diesel gen set? Mine is a diesel Onan 7500 and I've never given altitude a thought as far as the generator goes. I've run it from sea level to 9,000'+ and never had any issues.
