Well just lost the cooling unit in our 13 year old Dometic RM2862. Prior to the failure the freezer would get to -10 and refer at about 34.
Have a NEW cooling unit on the way from RV Cooling Unit Warehouse, for our RM 2862. This is an improved design over the OEM. I bought a rebuilt for the Norcold in our previous 5er and it worked great expect the same with this one.
RV Cooling Unit Warehouse
All well and good. Problem I see is, the replacement cooling unit cost more than a complete Secop/Danfoss compressor fridge and you still have the labor of replacing your old cooling unit with the new one.
Not advocating a compressor fridge over an ammonia fridge, only pointing out the advantages of a compressor fridge versus the ammonia one.
Big thing for me is the quick cool down, much more consistent temperature control and no hazardous chemicals inside (compressor fridges use enviromentally safe R134.
In my case the builders (Forest River / Palomino) really skimped on insulation to begin with. I had maybe a single flimsy wrap of insulation around the unit to begin with and I added almost a full roll of R11 unfaced. I put that squarely on the builder. They also neglected to install the Dometic required upper baffle behind the evaporator which I fabricated from a sheet of aluminum and the installed upper cavity muffin fan (Dometic) was the cheapest available, noisy, sleeve bearing fan, I replaced it and added another, 2 Fluid Dynamic Bearing, silent fans.
My unit's lower intake and upper vent are in the sidewall, much like a slide mounted fridge so I really have no convection airflow unless artificially created.
