I've got a side by side Domectic in my 40 foot 5th wheel that setting on my rV lot. It's 2003 model, and yes it still works. But just before I left to go on this trip I on it was starting to act up (like not holding temps). So when I return I'll probably take it out and install a residential unit I found at Home Depot that'll side right in. Just have to fill in on the sides, and some trim on the top.
A residential unit don't work for me because I only camp disbursed. Residential compressor units, compressors are either all or nothing. That is, the compressors don't adjust to cooling load, they run at 100% output until the set point is reached and then shut down completely until the set point is exceeded by 'x' number of dergree's and then they start again, at 100% output.
A Secop/Danfoss compressor is a duty cycle compressor. It modulates it's capacity to cool based on compartment temperature so it's rarely running at 100% capacity and a Secop compressor has been designed to be more efficient to begin with. A typical Secop/Danfoss compressor pulls less than 5 amps at 100% duty cycle and most time is pulling less than 2 amps. An ammonia fridge with auxillary cooling fans is approaching that and it's basically all the time.
I've read many comments on the net where people are running Secop/Danfoss units using a single house battery and 150 watts of solar backup.
Not advocating for one, only presenting the pro's and cons. In my case, I'll be refitting this winter anyway.
