Another solar question

Sorry, I thought I had this all figured out.

I've decided to replace the camper battery with a AGM. The present battery is inside the camper in a vented box but I would feel better with a AGM.

I've heard that I may need a special controller for an AGM battery.

If this is true, could you point me to the right one?

Thanks so much.............DJ

  • In use it does not matter too much. Storage is an issue as AGM may not like 2+ hours of absorption every day when already at 100%. Disconnect for storage works good also if the algorithm is not perfect.
  • There are many flavors of AGM batteries and a generic AGM setting on a cheap solar controller is likely to destroy many of them. You need a programmable solar controller unless you know the charging set points of a particular controller match the requirements of your batteries.
  • You can get a $12 controller on ebay that has 10 different adjustable things on it, and one of them is the battery. Infact I have a brand new one, but it was only 10 amps, so I had to put it in my spare parts box. But it worked great on a 90 watt panel

If you want the link, I could find it, but so can anyone.

But, at the same time, I been charging AGMs for 10 yrs w/ regular chargers, and the batteries lasted 10 yrs too.
  • Hi,

Tell us about the whole system? I'd suggest a high end controller with adjustable set points.
  • Many controllers have a selection button for Wet, AGM, or Gel. The AGM voltage set points on mine are a bit lower in voltage than the Wet set points.

However, some AGMs are spec to use the same or higher? voltages. Each brand /type of AGM seems to be different. First find out what your particular AGM has for charging specs, then compare with any controller's set-points.
