The 2.8 KW Onan definitely will run a 7000 BTU A/C.
If I were installing an Onan generator permanently, I'd probably go the LP gas route using a set of 30# or 40# bottles, with a spare or two on hand. Mainly because if there were a leak, assuming nothing flammable nearby, the propane would dump into the air and disperse harmlessly, while I'd have a mini Superfund site with a leaky diesel tank.
