Hi,
You do not "Have" to use the built in ignighter. I find it easy and quiet to use a BBQ lighter, as I also do not want my face near the Olympic heater as I light it. If you do this at night, when it is fairly dark, you can see a 'puff' of gas light off, as the flame goes from the bottom to the top.
And as stated above, the lighter needs to stay above 300F or so to keep 75 mV applied to the gas valve. If the pad gets too cool, then the gas valve will shut off.
I like to hold in the valve for about 15 seconds, and then light it, then hold it in for another 10 seconds or so, it will give a flame a couple of times, and then will be lit top to bottom. Then leave on high until it is good and red.
After that, I can change it to med or low output. I will leave my roof vents open wide if required to regulate the heat output. Mine sits in front of the oven, and below the kitchen Fantastic fan. I have Max fan covers over all three vents. On a cold night, all three vents will be open about 1/3" to prevent to much fume build up. I leave the Cat heater on all night when below 50F outside. I also leave the window behind the kitchen sink open about 1/2" too.
On nights below 25F outside, I will also run the furnace every once in a while, to circulate the heat into the basement, and corners of the RV. It does not run very long, say 5 minutes every 1/2 hour or so.
Have fun camping!
Fred.
