The reason for high voltage has to do with how hard the inverter/charger must work. There is a lot more loss to heat with 12 volts dc to 120 volts ac compared to 48 volts dc to 120 volts ac.
48 volts allows the use of smaller wire--but it is always good to have too thick, and as short a run as is possible.
If I were starting over, I'd definitely go to 48 volts.
The down side is that a DC 48 to dc 12 charger needs to be added to the mix.
