Atwood Water Heater Too Hot

I have a 10 gal atwood water heater. The water is too hot, the temp valve will open and start spewing hot water. I crawled in there and t
ook off the back panel, the electric side, and found the high temp reset. It clicked when I pushed it, that tells me it had been tripped, right? I turned the water heater back on and thought I had it, but the temp at the sink was 155 before I shut it off. What temp is the tstat set at and the eco?

  • YEAH......kinda tough for those button t-stats to properly sense temps when they are NOT held tight against tank wall

Glad to hear you have it working properly now......scalding water at faucet is no fun!

    Thanks for posting the update.
  • Hey Old Biscuit, replaced tstat and eco works great. Apparently the po had been in there, and didn't put the springs or plastic gaskets back in. Thanks, again, for all your help.
  • Thanks OB. You are correct, I have a 2002 model and the stat and eco are on the backside. Thanks
  • If the t-stats (ECO & Normal) are located on backside of WH by electric element then your WH is a pre-2003 model and uses a 110V AC set of t-stats (Atwood changed design in 2003--use just one 12V DC set for both electric/propane).

So you need the old style---110V AC
    ECO----preset to OPEN at 180*F
    Normal----preset to OPEN at 140*F

    Your Normal t-stat has failed.

Easy to replace both...as you have to get in there anyway.

    Normal #92943
  • I had the same thing happen I bought a new adjustable thermostat from amazon for around $28. Really easy to put on set it at A position and the water is 125
