Atwood water heater won't restart

I have an Atwwod G6A-8E water heater that just started not re-heating after the water cools. At initial start-up it runs fine, gas turns on, ignitor sparks, burner lights and water heats but when the water temp drops over time it will not restart to heat the water again. If you cycle the switch off/on then it will relight and heat up the tank again, once.

Any idea what I should be looking at?

  • So I picked up an Atwood 91447 t-stat/ECO replacement and changed them out and it completely solved the problem. The water heater cycles a lot less frequently than it ever has and hasn't missed a beat all weekend.

    Thanks for the help.
  • I've never seen the light come on so it might not even work. If I turn the switch off then on it will turn on the burner and run until the water is hot again. I picked up a new Thermostat set so I'll change it this weekend and see how it goes.

    Thanks for the advice.
  • Water hot...........normal t-stat opens at 140*F
Water really hot....ECO (high temp t-stat) opens at 180*F

Water temp needs to drop to 110*F or lower for either t-stat to close
IF ECO opens...you should get 'Fault light' at On/Off panel. Must turn off then back on to reset 'fault' (Does light work??)

Atwood 91447 is correct t-stat/ECO replacement
  • Water is hot, not sure about really hot. That would make sense though. So a new thermosat/E.C.O assembly? Attwood 91447 is what I found.
  • Is the water really hot? Does the fault light come on when it shuts off? If so, the thermostat has failed, and it's cycling on the limit switch (water heats until the limit shuts off the propane, causing it to go into lockout).
