Atwood water heater

I have a 10 gallon Atwood gas/electric water heater in my motorhome.
Over the weekend the water would not get very hot, i tried electric and gas. i could hear the gas burner burning and the power dip on electric, it looked and sounded normal. Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks, Jeff.
  • Assuming it was working properly and just started acting this way, check to see if you have check valves on the unit. A bad one on the output side could cause this problem. Unfortunately, they are on the back side of the tank, usually in a very hard to get to location.
  • If the water heater bypass valve is open (winterizing position), you will actually be mixing hot and cold water and therefore, water will not be very hot. (Maybe a burst of hot at first, then lukewarm). Any chance the valves in and out of the heater were opened, but the bypass valve was not closed?
  • Nope, i do not have an outside shower. I think its in the water heater, i was hoping someone had a similar problem.
  • Any chance the outside shower knobs were left on but the head is turned off?
