Atwood water heater

I recently purchased a two year old Jayco TT. It has a Atwood GC6AA-10 combo gas-elec. water heater. To my knowledge it has only been used with electric. I fill the tank with water and lite the propane with the igniter, it lite fine. BUT-the flame is very quite and yellow.(not blue like suppose to be). Also the black smoke rolls out of the flue box. I blowed out the burn chamber, no help. I adjusted the air-gas every way, no help. I installed a new solenoid valve, no help.
If anyone has ever had this problem or have any idea on what is causing my problem, please help me. I have always got good info on this forum and I'm sure I will again and I am very thankful for it.
Thanks to all that read my post.
  • Blowing air thru rarely will remove obstructions.......need to mechanically clean it

Remove burner tube and clean it out with a small bottle brush or shotgun brush

Unscrew main gas orifice (brass insert on gas valve where burner tube connects) and soak it in alcohol then blow it out (no poking things thru hole as it is metered)

Run a wire thru combustion chamber and out the exhaust ----tie rag onto wire and pull it back thru 'U' chamber

Re-assemble, set air shutter 1/4 open and fire it off.....then adjust air shuttle
  • My understanding is that a yellowish flame means the burner may be dirty. I read that on a search I did when our kitchen stove flame did that. I have also noticed that the kitchen stove flame with turn yellowish a day or so before we run out of propane. How is the gas supply?
  • I think Old-Biscuit is correct on every count. Spiders are attracted to the propane, and will build a web in the burner tube. I have had that issue several times with a new to me RV.

I install a piece of 1/8" hardware cloth on the water heater vent. Never an issue with spiders and such afterwards. I think you can buy ready built screens for that purpose.
