The top is just lag bolted to the frame around the roof so the wood is continuous but I've noticed that many trailers have a sticker that shows where the bottom of the leg is to be lag bolted. Before getting a new shorter awning I would make sure there is wood behind in this lower area. (It probably is because it's probably just bolted to the edge of the floor framing.)
