I know that I can, and do, use my home generator by plugging the two outlets from the genny into house outlets that are powered by different busbars in the breaker box, (after shutting off the master)...

In theory your idea would work if you turned off the breaker that powers the converter to keep it from making a loop. In a practical sense, the cig lighters are only rated for 10 amps at 12V, for a total of 120 watts. If you try to pull more than that it will toast the 12v fuse protecting the cig outlet. I had a 150W inverter that I used with that cig outlet and got constant low voltage alarms from it just trying to power a 70W TV set. Also, if you have just one battery, it will die long before you get where you are going.
