So long as you REMEMBER to do everything perfectly EVERYTIME!
The reason that this is illegal just about everywhere, is that the life you are putting in danger is someone else's.
This is not a unsafe act such as not wearing your seatbelt.... Where the life you are endangering is only your own.
The types of wiring you are proposing are so dangerous, that I won't even discuss how to do it.
Just that it must be done perfectly EVERY TIME..
The problem is that if one forgets, and a linemen doesn't happen to work on your line at that time,,,, nothing bad happens. Then a lacadasical attitude sets in, and somebody ends up DEAD.

I did say "after shutting off the master". By that I mean I isolate my house from the rest of the power grid. The linemen are safe.
