The problem is that if one forgets, and a linemen doesn't happen to work on your line at that time,,,, nothing bad happens. Then a lacadasical attitude sets in, and somebody ends up DEAD.

I agree with your response on this issue. Even if the OP does open the breaker there is no way for him to know if it is actually open. To know for sure you have to see an air gap which you cannot see with a small breaker. As a retired utility operator/electrician I can only hope that the OP changes his system to an ATS, back feeds into the power grids can and DO KILL. JMO

I did say "after shutting off the master". By that I mean I isolate my house from the rest of the power grid. The linemen are safe.
