If you have ever been rear-ended with a ball mount in place on the back of your truck..........You will appreciate having it!:B
My son is a safety director working in the oil industry. He was pretty shocked to recently learn that having a big hitch head, or pintle hook needlessly hanging off the tail of a truck muddies the water, when it comes to being rear ended. He was informed that it's no longer an air-tite case of the other driver being fully responsible for a rear hit. IF the striking vehicle sustains unusual damage due to striking the unused, removable head, the truck owner may be considered partially at fault, and splitting the bill.
Now don't shoot the messenger here, I don't know if it's becoming common practice, or just a single insurance company being proactive with their risk management, but I though it was an interesting piece of info.
another interesting what if, what if you were carrying a 2x10 in a PU extending 4 ft or so behind the rear tail gate at about windshield height with the red flag making it all legal, and somebody hits it and decapitates them? probably would make a messy civil suit.
years back in Iowa a prominent citizen ran into the back of a semi trailer, sliding under it and decapitating both he and his wife. not too long afterwards, the steel cage under the rear of the trucks started appearing.
