I'd bet the problem is normal.
If the start batt and house batts are near each other, connecting a jumper between the positive terminals will fix the problem during storage.
I myself ran the jumper thru a switch mounted under the dash.
A trickle start is good too, but IMO is one more pc of electronics that could one day fail.
