Lots of good info posted. If some wires are too short don't splice and tape. Properly run them to a terminal block. Safer and if you have any problems later it is easier to trouble shoot problems. Label the wires. I use duck tape over insulated cables and felt tip pen to label. Otherwise you'll be untaping splices later and wondering where the @#$@@& did those wires go. And your DW will say you should have labeled them. :B
Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not using it as electrical tape. I put the duck tape over the insulated wire back a few inches from the connection. It is used for labeling not as an insulation. Sorry it wasn't clear. I label any wires I remove and replace on anything I work on. Worked in electronics too long not to label wires.
