batteries

I put my rv in storage and used the disconnects to turn the batteries off.I have done this several times with no problem. This time i left it longer than i should have probley six months or longer. When i came back all my batteries were dead.I jumped it and it started.I let it idle for probley an hour and shut it off.I tryed to restart it and nothing not even a light came on the dash. The generator restarted though. Is it possible for the batteries to go dead after six months of sitting even with the disconnects?
  • Hi,

The battery disconnect switch in a self propelled RV does not disconnect the chassis battery.

I suggest adding a modest solar panel system and adding a trik-l-start unit.

I gather this is a motor home. So you have an on board Generator

This generator should be run under 1/2 load for at least 1/2 hour every month Storage or not it needs to be run. This keeps some components "Fresh" keeps slip rings polished and does other nice things... NOTE this is mostly for the benefit of the GENERATOR not the motor.

I installed two additional circuits 20 amp. 12ga wire 15/20 amp type outlets (Different color) for use with electric space heaters (I DO NOT recommend putting a 1500 watt heater on a standard RV outlet) this works out great.

IN your case I'd run the generator at least one hour once a month. Monitor battery SOC and if the voltage starts droppign too much. ADD more generator time to that run (Check voltage before you reconnect batteries before you start generator) Up to 4 hours if batteries really need it. In time you will fine tune the run time. Make sure gas tank is full before you park for the winter.
  • You might try disconnecting the batteries by disconnecting one of the battery leads. Not sure what "used the disconnects" means. You might also check the current flowing, if any, when using the disconnects. One hour charging at idle speed doesn't seem like much, do you know what the charging current was?
  • Following the bouncing ball and do as Track Rig and others suggest. It's a ritual that we all follow sooner or later. Psychic deducement is almost never correct.
  • Most of the time it had been in storage had been winter.I keep the water up and make sure i have a full charge. This has worked for me a long time.Could the winter months and it being outside storage explain what happen or could it be something else?Anyway im gonna get a new starting battery and see if that helps but i hope it dont happen again.
  • Have them checked.
You may have had one of them internally short during storage and if that's the case, you don't want to keep trying to charge them.
  • Try cleaning the battery terminals even if they don't look dirty.
