battery choice

Hi,

I am in analysis paralysis.

I will be purchasing AGM jars.

Here are my two choices:

AGM L-16 Surrette 400 amp-hour six volt with 0.145 plates cost $520 plus tax and shipping Four are needed.

AGM group 27 but group 31 plates 120 amp-hours twelve volt with 0.118 plates cost $230 each plus tax and shipping. I have room for seven.

Charging sources are:

magnum inverter charger @ 125 amps max
progressive dynamics 40 amp
alternator
256 watts of solar with a blue sky 3024di controller.

Which would you choose?

Why?

  • I'd guess that you would be looking at a future solar upgrade, yes/no?
There would be some balance point, I'm thinking, involving your use, the solar charging, and the amount of discharge/rated number of cycles involved. This is a real number crunching exercise to get maximum longevity rather than ease of installation and maintenance.

All things stated as built, the L-16's win the challenge.
  • I don't care about the technical stuff. I just want PT to buy from wegosolar because the lady there really knows her solar stuff, mostly on stick house big installs, but also knows the whole field, and has helped me out.

So PT, spend your money there and it won't be wasted! Get those Surrettes from her :)
  • Certainly easier to wire up the L16s, a little more cost but excellent battery.
  • "Rolls"

    "No. Surrette"

"Oops I did an owie. I forgot Viva la Fracoise Quebecois rules north of the border"

Crown has an outstanding reputation, and I would PREFER that an OEM make their own battery. This really hinges on an IF. If the Crown L-16 positive plate is really .220" and wasn't an error or misprint, it gives me pause. If the Crown does not sport a .220" plate, then Crown gets it --- knocked in the dirt for selection IMHO.
    • Me? Four L-16's would provide enough watts to melt my rig into the pavement. A gaggle of 31's would have the capability of melting my rig to the main boulevard in Beijing
    • So how many CCA's is enough?
    • The thicker the plates the more I can mistreat the battery (up to a point)
    • There is no reason on earth that gives credibility to the notion that an L-16 should have thinner plates than a group 31 Lifeline
    • Someone is monking the funky with such nonsense
    • "Oh our RV tires are rated 2-ply to reduce rolling resistance and heat"
