I just replaced my combiner solenoid. It hasn't been operational for a few years now. I actually have a switch that keeps the solenoid off. My solar does a great job charging my house batteries and don't need alternator assistance unless it's cloudy or raining. But I want the solenoid functional now as I'm heading for Baja soon with a 7-year old chassis battery. In case the chassis batteries dies I can activate the solenoid to start up the diesel.
Here's the old solenoid. A very simple design. The copper bolt head acts as the contact point. A copper washer electrically connects the two bolt heads when the solenoid is activated. One of the contact points is black from heat and then corrosion. Other than some black corrosion on the copper washer, it's in great shape. If you're out in no-where-land and solenoid fails you can saw it open, clean it and reuse. Try doing that with one of those fancy electronic switches should they break.
I replaced it with a Cole Hersee. It's basically the same design.
