I would think that the 5050, being 3 leds in the same package, would produce more heat and might possibly have some ill effects. The 3528 or 1210 (the same led, 3528 is metric) may be a little more costly to assemble since 2x the number of leds is required.
Edit: I think 48 3528 is about the same brightness (lumens) as 24 5050.
