The reason you see more 5050 LED's being sold is the "China syndrome". If a new device comes to market the Asian vendors want to be the one that leads out in sales for the newer devices. I like the 48-3528 boards as the quantity of diodes seems to give adequate light spread in a down-firing location. I haven't tried but a couple of the 5050 boards since the 3528's do the job so well.
Tenbear is probably spot on with his assessment of lumen output comparison. 12 or 16 5050's are less output then the 48-3528's. I tried a 12-5050 for task lighting over the sink cabinet and it was not enough output for that. It may be adequate for a reading light or in-cabinet light, though.
If you want light output that is really shocking to behold, you could get some of the newer Cree LED's. Some are enough output to use as deer spotters, lol.
