CFL's big drawback: Warmup time. Radiating surface area is key. Beer cans sound amusing but connecting them into a radiating surface area would be daunting. The Chinese are going to have to learn that casting aluminum is also effective and a lot cheaper than extruding. A fan doubles or trebles the effectiveness of radiation area but fans wear out. I converted a five pound (expensive) bathroom warm white fixture (13-watts) to a 36-volt 30-watt cool white fixture with fan cooling. Natural convection cooling fixtures are expensive. Who wants to pay seventy dollars for a bathroom ceiling fixture? The lamp is now DC boosted 12-volts and with a 30-watt white chip it is bright. Even for a four pound fixture.
